Why rest days matter
Regardless of your actual level of fitness –sports addicts or new ones to the practice–, you will have to make sure to take recovery days in between training sessions. You can have a quick stretch at the end of cardio and bodybuilding trainings in order to cool down and relax. Nevertheless, you should include a day-off in your workout schedule. Many people tend to think that it is not important or that it will take more time to achieve their goals, but this is a misconception. On the contrary, an over-active lifestyle may cause serious injuries and lead to exhaustion.
In order to prevent these problems, pay attention to stretch at the end of every workout and focus on the muscles you just worked. It is recommended to hold the stretch for at least 60 seconds immediately after the exercise. A hot bath or shower will also help your muscles to relax and prevent the pain on the next days.
Finally, rest day doesn't mean lying on the sofa all day (but it is okay if you want to). You could have an entire stretching routine (from 30 minutes to 1 hour). As you tend to tighten your muscles during the workout, this habit is a gain for your flexibility. It is also possible to use fitness accessories, such as a foam roller, which will provide a massage to release the soreness.
